Domestic Violence Facts

Domestic Violence Facts > Domestic Violence Q & A

Domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence, can be physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.  Domestic violence is the most underreported crime.

According to a Fact Sheet published by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in 2006:

  • Each year, women experience about 4.8 million intimate partner related physical assaults and rapes.
  • Intimate partner violence resulted in 1,544 deaths in 2004. Of these deaths, 75% were females.
  • Intimate partner violence can affect health in many ways.  The longer the abuse goes on, the more serious the effects on the victim.

The complete CDC "Intimate Partner Violence Fact Sheet" can be viewed at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/dvp/IPV/default.htm

The following domestic violence facts were obtained from "Domestic Violence Research Brief" prepared by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (Crime Statistics Unit), August 2006:

  • Of the 87,106 victims reported, 62,758 (72.05%) were female . . .
  • The most frequently reported age range for female victims was 25-34 at 18,448.
  • The second most frequently reported age range was 18-24 at 16,833.
  • The most frequently reported race for female victims was white at 36,520.
  • The most frequently reported relationship was boyfriend/girlfriend at 36,061 (43.7%).
