Domestic Violence-Planning To Leave

Planning To Leave > Domestic Violence & A Higher Power

Domestic violence is an ongoing cycle of abuse and violence and oftentimes leaving is the only way to break the cycle.

As the domestic violence and abuse gets worse, it can break you down, affect your self-esteem, or even make you lose your sense of reality. You may even, at times, feel that the violence and abuse is your fault and that you deserve it.

Neither case is true.

You may need help from those who are trained in dealing with domestic violence and sometimes leaving may be the only way to break the cycle of domestic violence.

Since leaving an abuser can be dangerous, you are the only one who knows the safest time to leave.  Even if you plan to leave sometime in the future, there are some precautions you can take:

  • Come up with some type of safety signal with your neighbor as an alert to call the police if necessary.
  • Prepare an emergency bag to include:

Extra Clothes

Important Papers

Money

Extra keys

Prescription Medications

  • Know where you will go and how you will get there.
  • Call a local domestic violence organization to learn about resources available to you.
  • If your children are in school, talk with a school counselor and advise them of custody arrangements and possible threats.

The U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Women's Health has prepared a "Safety Planning List" and you may want to go to your local library and make a copy for your use.
