Domestic Violence Is All About "Power & Control"

Power & Control > Cycle of Violence

Domestic violence is for one purpose - to gain and maintain total power and dominance over the victim.  In addition to physical violence, the abuser will use other tactics to exert power over his wife or partner.

Domestic Violence Power and Control Wheel

Domestic Violence-Intimidation - He will make her afraid by using looks, actions, or gestures.  He may start smashing things or destroy her property.  He may display a weapon or even abuse pets.
Domestic Violence-Emotional Abuse - He will start playing mind games - putting her down, make her feel bad about herself, call her names, make her think she's crazy, humiliate her or make her feel guilty.
Domestic Violence-Isolation - He will control what she does, who she sees or talks to, what she reads, where she goes, or limit her outside involvement.  He will use jealousy to justify his actions.
Domestic Violence-Minimizing, Denying or Blaming - He will make light of the violence and he won't take her concerns about it seriously.  He may even say the violent abuse didn't even happen.  He may shift the responsibility for the violent abuse to the victim, saying she caused it.
Domestic Violence-Using Children - He will make her feel guilty about the children or even threaten to take them away.  He may use the children to relay messages or use visitation time to harass the victim.
Domestic Violence-Using Male Privilege - He feels he is the one to determine a man's and a woman's role in the relationship.  He will make all of the decisions and treat the victim like a servant.
Domestic Violence-Using Economic Abuse - He may try to keep his victim from getting or keeping a job.  He may give her an allowance or make her ask for money.  He may not let her know about family income or allow her to have access to it.  He may even steal her money.
Domestic Violence-Using Coercion & Threats - He may make and carry out threats to hurt her.  He may threaten to leave her or to commit suicide.  He may threaten to report her to welfare.  He may even make her do illegal things.

Life's New Beginnings is a non-profit organization established for the sole purpose of increasing public awareness of Domestic Violence and how it affects all of us.
